Supporting the UK Governments Transition to Windows 11

Windows 11 Upgrade in Safe Hands

A UK government organisation, faced the challenge of upgrading their systems to Windows 11. With a capable internal team already managing numerous responsibilities, they chose to partner with INTEGY to alleviate the pressure and ensure a smooth transition.

The environment presented unique complexities. With a significant portion of their workforce operating remotely and several overseas offices, the task of upgrading to Windows 11 required careful planning and execution. Additionally, with Windows 10 approaching its end of life, there was an urgency to complete the upgrade to maintain security and support. The client needed a partner who could manage this transition efficiently, allowing their internal team to focus on other critical tasks.

INTEGY stepped in to support with a dedicated team. Peter Cowell, a Cloud Engineer, played a key role in ensuring that all configuration profiles and application compatibility were in place. Matt Page, a Senior Cloud Engineer, took charge of planning and executing the upgrade. This project was Matt's first major assignment, and he approached it with enthusiasm and precision.

The Process: The journey began with a thorough analysis to confirm application compatibility and test the upgrade process. This initial phase was crucial to identify and address any potential issues early on. Additionally, INTEGY analysed all hardware for upgrade compatibility, upgraded drivers, and ensured that all hotfix prerequisites were in place. With this foundation in place, Matt meticulously planned the upgrade, creating user-facing communications and scheduling the upgrade to minimise disruption.

Given the remote and geographically dispersed nature of the clients workforce, the project required a strategic approach. Utilising Microsoft Intune, INTEGY managed the upgrade process efficiently, ensuring that all devices were upgraded with minimal user interaction. This approach was particularly important to limit the impact on users and ensure that operations continued smoothly.

Addressing Concerns: Throughout the project, INTEGY worked closely with the client to address several key concerns:

  • Windows 10 End of Life: With Windows 10 nearing its end of life, it was essential to complete the upgrade to Windows 11 to ensure continued security and support. INTEGY's proactive approach helped mitigate any risks associated with outdated software.
  • Minimising User Impact: The client's workforce was already busy with their regular responsibilities. INTEGY's careful planning and use of Intune ensured that the upgrade process was seamless, with minimal disruption to users.
  • Managing a Busy Organisation: By partnering with INTEGY, the client's internal team could focus on their core tasks, confident that the upgrade was being handled efficiently and effectively.

The Outcome:  The result was a successful upgrade to Windows 11, completed smoothly and efficiently. The project demonstrated the value of careful planning and the effective use of modern tools like Intune. The clients internal team could continue focusing on their core responsibilities, confident that the upgrade was in capable hands.

"Taking on this project was a significant milestone for me. The complexity of managing a remote and dispersed workforce while ensuring a seamless upgrade to Windows 11 was challenging but rewarding. The success of this project underscores the importance of meticulous planning and the power of modern tools like Intune." - Matt Page, Senior Cloud Engineer

Looking ahead with the Windows 11 upgrade complete, the next phase involves converting devices to EntraID only (from Hybrid). This transition aims to further streamline their IT infrastructure and enhance security, all while ensuring minimal impact on users.

Conclusion:   This case study highlights INTEGY's ability to support complex IT transitions, allowing clients to focus on their core tasks. The successful upgrade of the clients systems to Windows 11, despite the challenges of a remote and geographically dispersed workforce, underscores the importance of meticulous planning and the effective use of modern tools.

Special recognition goes to Peter Cowell for his instrumental role in configuration and compatibility, and to Matt Page for his outstanding planning and execution.

At INTEGY, we’re passionate about enabling organisations to embrace the future of work, especially when innovation and agility are at the heart of their mission. Recently, we had the privilege of supporting a client whose business serves as a launchpad for startups, providing the technology and equipment needed to kickstart their journey. The Challenge: Outdated IT for a Growing Organisation Our client’s IT infrastructure was a traditional setup, with user accounts and devices tightly bound to Active Directory. This configuration required devices to maintain network connectivity to on-premises servers, creating operational limitations. With the facility expanding to three separate locations, this approach no longer supported their need for flexibility, scalability, and efficiency. Startups thrive on speed and adaptability, and their IT systems needed to reflect those principles. The reliance on traditional IT was slowing them down, creating unnecessary overhead, and limiting their ability to provide the seamless experience their customers expected. The Solution: A Cloud-Native Transformation We transformed their IT environment into a modern, cloud-native setup: Entra ID for Identity Management Every device is now joined to Entra ID (formerly Azure AD), shifting identity management to the cloud. This eliminates the need for on-premises servers, offering secure access from anywhere. Intune for Device Management Devices are now managed through Microsoft Intune, enabling streamlined policy enforcement, application deployment, and security updates, all delivered from the cloud. Enhanced Security with Zero Trust Principles We implemented a Zero Trust security model, ensuring that devices and users are authenticated and compliant before accessing resources. Defender for Endpoint provides enhanced threat protection and visibility across their environment. Simplified User Experience By decoupling devices from on-premises dependencies, we empowered their users to work from any location with a secure, seamless experience. Scalability and Agility With their new cloud-native IT framework, our client is no longer constrained by physical infrastructure. They can now scale operations effortlessly as they open new locations and onboard new startups. The Results: Flexibility, Efficiency, and Growth The move to a cloud-native configuration has been a game-changer for our client. They’ve gained: Operational Efficiency : IT management is simpler and faster, reducing administrative overhead. Improved User Experience : Users now enjoy consistent and reliable access to systems, regardless of location. Scalability : Expansion to new sites no longer requires complex IT overhauls. Security : Advanced cloud security tools ensure their data and devices remain protected. By embracing modern IT, our client is better positioned to serve their customers and focus on what matters most: empowering innovation for startups. Helping You Move Forward If your organisation is grappling with the limitations of traditional IT and looking to make the leap to a cloud-native future, we’re here to help. Let’s transform your IT and unlock your potential.
